Operation: Escape Earth (CBS talk 2020)

Introduction
Public summary:

Talk for CBS 2020 about the physics of rockets!

Explanation
Explanation:

CBS 2020 - explanation to be added later!

In the meantime, a list of the planned demos:
- Hot air balloon/Chinese lantern - to be flown in lecture theatre to demonstrate the limits of buoyancy
- Hydrogen balloon or helium balloon vs. normal balloon - Compare the two. If a hydrogen-filled balloon is used, burn the hydrogen to show it's flammable
- Air/alcohol rocket - shoot a bottle filled with alcohol vapour
- Burning rocket fuel (KNO3 + icing sugar/jelly babies) in an open-topped tank. Alternatively, burning fuel in an open-ended pipe to get directional burning

Risk Assessment:
Demo Hazard Risk Affected Person(s) Likelihood Severity Overall Mitigation Likelihood Severity Overall
Hot Air Balloon/Chinese Lantern Candle Fire risk from candle proximity to paper lantern All 2 3 6 Separate candle from lantern, only use candle for lift off 1 3 3
Lantern If lantern lands in audience, could cause injury/disruption Audience 2 2 4 Request that the audience remain seated for the demonstration, and retrieve the lantern once landed 1 2 2
Hydrogen/Helium Balloon Balloon Balloon may burst and surprise people Audience 1 2 2 Warn the audience at the beginning of the talk 1 1 1
Balloon Balloon may fly into someone if the gas is released (i.e. balloon knot undone) Audience 2 1 2 Check balloon is securely tied 1 1 1
Flammable gas Burning hydrogen (if used) presents risk of burns/fire All 3 4 12 Use fuse to light so it sets on fire high in the air. Control height with tether, use nonflammable string or wire 1 4 4
Balloon Balloon may fly into someone if the gas is released (i.e. balloon knot undone) Audience 2 1 2 Check balloon is securely tied 1 1 1
Flash from burning hydrogen Bright flash from burning hydrogen could cause eye damage All 2 2 4 Warn the audience about the bright flash 1 2 2
Air/Alcohol Bottle Rocket Bottle May hit someone Audience 2 3 6 Use guiding string to control flight path or tether to control range. Stand back. Conduct in empty area. Tie knot in guiding string to stop rocket firing too far. 1 3 3
Tethered bottle May land on someone when it falls Audience 2 2 4 Use further tethers to prevent audience being hit 1 2 2
Alcohol vapour Fire from burning alcohol vapour could set other things alight All 2 4 8 Use guiding string to control flight path or tether to control range. Stand back. Conduct in empty area. 1 4 4
Alcohol Could catch fire during refuelling All 2 4 8 Keep away from flame source before lighting 1 4 4
Rocket Shock due to the rocket Audience 1 2 2 Warn audience at beginning of talk 1 1 1
Burning rocket fuel underwater Burning fuel If fire cannot be extinguished easily, it could set fire to surroundings All 2 4 8 Keep separate from flame sources before lighting and burn on heat plate underwater. Light using fuse. Don’t use much fuel. 1 4 4
Directional burning Pipe could be difficult to control, risk of fire/burns All 3 4 12 Secure pipe so that it fires vertically downwards 1 4 4
